Shay Murtagh Precast supplied a series of concrete culvert units for the Chelmsford North East Bypass, delivered in collaboration with contractor Octavius for Essex County Council. This infrastructure scheme forms part of a strategic route improvement, easing congestion and supporting planned residential development at Beaulieu Park.
The scope of supply included 18 precast concrete culvert units, each with internal dimensions of 2.0m x 2.0m. Designed and manufactured in-house, each unit was produced with integral wingwalls and retaining walls to ensure seamless installation and durability. These culverts play a vital role in the scheme’s drainage infrastructure, meeting strict performance and hydraulic efficiency requirements.
The Chelmsford North East Bypass is a key part of a wider infrastructure strategy to improve transport links in mid-Essex. The scheme will connect the A131 at Great Leighs to the A12 at Boreham, forming a crucial section of the future Beaulieu railway station link. By supporting this bypass with precision-manufactured concrete culvert units, Shay Murtagh contributed to improving drainage resilience in an area set for major growth. The bypass also supports sustainable travel and economic development by easing congestion and improving access to new homes and employment zones.

Our involvement in the Chelmsford project highlights the precision and quality embedded in every Shay Murtagh solution. Manufactured to tight tolerances, the units contribute to safer and faster on-site assembly — a key factor in large-scale projects where time and accuracy are critical.
As part of our end-to-end service, the project benefited from close coordination across design, manufacturing, and logistics, helping maintain programme timelines and quality control.
