We are immensely proud to extend our congratulations to the students and faculty of Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar. On the 23rd of November, the Transition Year class received a prestigious National Garda Award in recognition of their outstanding Road Safety Awareness Campaign. As a company deeply rooted in the local community, it is inspiring to see the next generation taking a proactive stance on such a critical issue.
The statistics surrounding road safety in Ireland are sobering. Since 2019, individuals aged between 16 and 25 have accounted for approximately 20% of all road deaths, despite representing just 12% of the total population. Regrettably, this trend has deteriorated in 2024, with one-third of fatalities occurring within the under-25 demographic. Young men remain the most affected group, constituting 7 out of every 10 driver fatalities. Recognising this crisis, Coláiste Mhuire took meaningful action through their long-running Transition Year road safety programme.
The students engaged directly with young men at the very start of their driving careers to challenge behaviours and encourage safer decision-making. In partnership with Westmeath County Council, they produced a driver safety advert that tackles the dangers of distracted driving. This initiative demonstrates true leadership and has already garnered over two million views. At Shay Murtagh, safety is a core pillar of our Mission, Vision and Values, and we are delighted to see our local students championing this message.
Viewers of the campaign video might even recognise a familiar vehicle; we were honoured to have one of our trucks featured in the production. Operating a large logistics fleet requires constant vigilance, and we support any initiative that makes our roads safer for heavy goods vehicles and car users alike.
This award is a testament to the hard work of the teachers, students, and partners involved, including An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority. Coláiste Mhuire has sent a powerful message: if one life is saved, the campaign is a success. We encourage everyone to watch the video below and share its vital message.
