The official opening of the new Mullingar Rugby Club clubhouse at Shay Murtagh Park on Saturday, April 18, marked a significant milestone for the local community and the sport in Westmeath. Minister Charlie McConalogue performed the ribbon-cutting duties, joined by colleagues Robert Troy and Peter Burke, to celebrate a facility that sets a new benchmark for junior rugby venues in Ireland.
Shay Murtagh Park has seen a complete transformation, evolving into a modern hub capable of hosting high-profile events. Club President Ciarán Murtagh highlighted that the recent upgrades were specifically designed to foster a more inclusive environment. By modernising the dressing rooms to include dedicated, safe spaces for women and girls, the club has moved away from outdated configurations to ensure rugby is accessible to everyone. This commitment to diversity was supported by the Sports Capital Grant and the IRFU, ensuring the infrastructure meets international standards.
The impact of these improved facilities is already evident at Mullingar Rugby Club. Following the completion of the project, the club successfully hosted an underage international fixture between Ireland and France. Such achievements are made possible by the rigorous quality standards and infrastructure planning that Shay Murtagh supports across various sectors. Whether it is providing structural components for projects or supporting local community landmarks, the focus remains on long-term value and utility.
While government and IRFU funding provided essential support, Ciarán Murtagh noted that the drive behind the project came from the members and local business sponsors. The clubhouse is now a versatile space used by all generations, from hosting international athletes to local community functions. As the club moves forward, its role as a community pillar continues, with upcoming events like Darkness Into Light starting and finishing at the grounds. This development reflects our broader mission, vision, and values of supporting regional growth and building strong foundations for future generations.
