Evans by Shay Murtagh was appointed by Maylim in September 2024 to deliver a comprehensive hard landscaping package for Oxford North, a new £1.2 billion global innovation district. This flagship development, designed to boost the United Kingdom’s science, technology, and AI sectors, required high-specification infrastructure to define its public realm. Evans by Shay Murtagh were tasked with the design, manufacture, and supply of bespoke architectural precast units to form the district's entrance walls, extensive planters, steps, and wayfinder plinth units.
The project demanded a material finish that would complement the modern, forward-thinking aesthetic of the district while maintaining long-term durability. We manufactured approximately 200 architectural precast units using a specialized limestone architectural mix. Each unit was finished with a precision acid-etching technique to expose the fine aggregate, creating a consistent, high-quality texture across the development. This finish not only provides a visually striking appearance but also ensures resilience against the heavy footfall expected in such a busy innovation hub.
Our ability to control every stage of the process allowed us to meet the strict logistical requirements of the main contractor. Manufacturing was completed off-site at our facility during Q1 and Q2 of 2025, ensuring that all components were ready for a seamless installation. This off-site approach ensures rigorous quality control and reduces on-site program risks, a critical factor for large-scale infrastructure projects where scheduling is paramount. The site was officially opened by Lord Hague in September 2025, marking a major milestone for the United Kingdom's science sector.
