At Shay Murtagh Precast, our bridge engineering expertise was central to the delivery of the Greek Street bridge, part of a ÂŁ20m upgrade benefiting both the road and rail network south of Stockport station. This innovative structure carries a roundabout over the West Coast Main Line, improving traffic flow while supporting critical railway operations.
All precast concrete components were manufactured at our Shay Murtagh Raharney, Co. Westmeath facility and integrated with purpose-designed steel units. Before delivery, we conducted a full trial assembly, welcoming Network Rail and principal contractor Murphy for detailed inspections. These “dress rehearsals” were vital to iron out any unforeseen issues and ensure each section would fit perfectly during installation.
Transporting the bridge to site was a major operation in itself. A convoy of 40 lorries and low-loaders carried the concrete and steel components by ferry from Dublin to Liverpool, then onwards to Greater Manchester. This meticulously planned journey was timed to align with a rare three-week closure of the railway between 2–23 August, during which each section would be craned into place with precision.
The logistics stage was meticulously coordinated. A massive convoy of 40 trucks transported the completed bridge sections via the Dublin–Liverpool ferry, timed precisely to coincide with a planned three-week railway closure. This reflects our commitment to delivering quality in every stage of the process.
From the initial design to final placement, the project reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and teamwork. This bridge engineering achievement required close collaboration with Network Rail, Stockport Council, Transport for Greater Manchester, and multiple rail operators providing alternative services.
Sustainability also played a role in this project, with processes aligned to our sustainable future principles. Through innovative precast solutions, careful planning, and strong partnerships Shay Murtagh delivered a major infrastructure upgrade without compromise on safety or performance.
