Crystal Palace Gardens

The ambitious regeneration of Crystal Palace Gardens is currently transforming one of London’s most significant Victorian landscapes. In May 2025, Evans by Shay Murtagh was appointed by Maylim to provide specialist architectural manufacturing services for this heritage restoration. The project’s success relied heavily on the design and production of bespoke limestone retaining walls, engineered to seamlessly blend with the park's historic fabric while offering modern structural resilience.

The scope of works required the manufacture of approximately 100 specialized precast units. Our engineering team focused on creating the entrance limestone retaining walls for the lower Italian terrace ramp, a focal point of the site’s topography. To replicate the visual character of the original stonework, the units were cast using a specific architectural mix and treated with a high-specification etched finish. This process exposes the aggregate, providing a texture that mirrors the weathering of natural stone while ensuring the durability required for a high-traffic public space.

Manufacturing was successfully completed during Q3 and Q4 of 2025. Our production teams worked in close coordination with HTA Design LLP to ensure every detail met the rigorous standards set by the London Borough of Bromley. Utilizing our advanced in-house design capabilities, we modelled the complex geometries of the ramp and seating walls before casting began, ensuring a precise fit upon delivery to the site.

Beyond the limestone retaining walls, we also delivered precast concrete seating for the new dinosaur-themed children's playground. With manufacturing concluded and the units delivered, the site works are progressing steadily. The full improvements are expected to open to the public by summer 2026. This project highlights the Shay Murtagh Group's expertise in delivering complex concrete retaining walls
and architectural features. As we continue to support major infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland, the Crystal Palace scheme serves as a prime example of how precast concrete can secure the future of our shared heritage.
