Stockton Waterfront

Shay Murtagh was proud to play a vital role in the transformation of Stockton Waterfront through the bridge beam installation of 47 high-specification concrete beams for a prominent new land bridge at the heart of the development. Commissioned by Esh Group for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, this key infrastructure element provides a level pedestrian route between the High Street and the River Tees, spanning the A1305 Riverside Road.

Part of a £23 million urban park project, the new bridge is a centrepiece in Stockton’s wider regeneration plan - an ambitious initiative set to shape the town’s public realm over the next 20 years. Delivered by Esh Construction’s civil engineering division in partnership with the council, the urban park will reconnect the urban centre with the waterfront through new green spaces, a public amphitheatre, and play areas.

Our scope included the precision manufacture and delivery of 45 prestressed standard precast beams, each 21.5 metres long and weighing 17 tonnes, alongside 2 bespoke edge beams weighing 35 tonnes. All beams were fabricated at our facility in County Westmeath, incorporating 40% GGBS to significantly reduce carbon emissions - part of our continued commitment to a sustainable future.

The beams were manufactured using concrete with 40% GGBS, reducing carbon emissions while maintaining strength and durability. This environmentally conscious approach aligns with our dedication to sustainable construction practices and long-term value for communities and public infrastructure projects.

This bridge is a striking centrepiece in Stockton’s wider regeneration plan, aiming to reconnect the urban centre with the waterfront through new green spaces, a public amphitheatre, and play areas. The 55-metre-wide structure will eventually support over 600m² of paving, making it a highly visible and accessible feature for the community.

The successful bridge beam installation which was completed over four days using a 200-tonne crane, was the result of detailed coordination between Shay Murtagh, Esh Construction, and BEMAC Construction. Esh’s project team also conducted a full inspection of the beams at our facility to verify quality and compliance before delivery. Esh’s Contracts Manager, David Player, described the installation as a complex logistical operation, requiring meticulous scheduling and precise teamwork to ensure all beams arrived, were positioned, and were secured within the tight programme.

Before delivery, Esh’s project team visited our facility to conduct a full inspection, verifying quality and compliance with project specifications

This project is another example of how our collaborative approach, structural expertise and rigorous quality control deliver value on complex infrastructure projects.
