The Congleton Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) upgrade was delivered for United Utilities, with C2V+ (a joint venture between VolkerStevin and Jacobs) acting as the main contractor. Located in Congleton, Cheshire, the project sits within the water and wastewater infrastructure sector.
Shay Murtagh Precast was selected to supply key precast concrete elements for this important upgrade. The scheme was designed to increase treatment capacity, improve environmental performance, and ensure the long-term protection of local waterways. It also aimed to support the growing needs of the surrounding community by enhancing wastewater management capabilities.
This £20 million investment by United Utilities is a crucial part of wider efforts to improve water quality in the River Dane, promoting a cleaner, more sustainable local environment.
Drawing on our expertise in water infrastructure, Shay Murtagh Precast designed, manufactured, and delivered two precast settlement tanks. Each tank measured 22.70 metres in internal diameter and 6.0 metres in height. The tanks incorporated 7.5-degree sloping floors, a central hopper for sediment collection, and integrated precast launders within the walls to optimise performance.
From the early design stage through to manufacturing and logistics, our team ensured precision, quality, and efficient delivery. Our deep experience in producing precast settlement tanks allowed for reduced construction time and minimal site disruption, helping the main contractor to meet strict project deadlines.
The Congleton WWTW upgrade clearly demonstrates the important role that durable, high-quality precast settlement tanks and advanced concrete solutions play in sustainable infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland.
