Evans by Shay Murtagh were contacted by main contractor John Sisk in early 2018 to request assistance with the development and construction of a large public realm scheme for a residential development close to the National Stadium at Wembley for the developers Quintain.
Evans were subsequently appointed to develop the design in conjunction with Sisk, LDA design, PRP Architects and Buro Happold.
Elements of the project had originally been developed as insitu concrete and Sisk were keen to investigate the possibility of precast concrete for the main lagoon, source pond and two intermediate ponds along with some more standard PCC seating walls.
Our in house design team worked closely with Sisk and Buro Happold along with the project designers LDA design and PRP architects to develop a precast solution for the design. Using BIM technology we were also able to incorporate recesses and voids for the lighting and water features provided by Fountains Direct and ensure limited on site issues through effective co-ordination of this information to all parties.
During the design development stage of the project, a full scale mock up of some of the key areas was also manufactured and installed at Evans. These units incorporated examples of the lighting and water features which were to be installed in the final production units.
Evans developed a range of colours and finishes for the precast units which were reviewed by the project team. The final choice for the precast pond terraces, seating and planter units was a warm beige limestone mix with a heavy acid etched finish with a contrasting charcoal grey granite based acid etched mix for the water feature units.
Manufacture of the units commenced in Spring 2019 with on site installation starting in November 2019 and opened to the public in 2021.
Evans supplied and installed @ 800nr PCC units to the project, forming the main lagoon, source pond and intermediate ponds, seating walls, planters and retaining walls.
800nr units, 750m3/1850 tonnes of architectural Cotswold limestone based acid etched precast concrete mix for the main seating and terracing areas and black granite architectural precast for the water feature units – 110 loads to site
Custom units / bespoke designs / challenges -50nr bespoke moulds were manufactured to cast various profiles of seating walls, stepped terracing and water feature units
Units cast over a 12 month period- Manufacture of the units commenced in Spring 2019 with on site installation starting in November 2019 and opened to the public in 2021.
