The New Tyne Crossing is one of the largest infrastructure projects in construction in Great Britain.
TT2, appointed Concessionaire to design, build, part finance and operate a second vehicle tunnel under the Rive Tyne. TT2 to operate all other tunnels until 2037.
The New Tyne Crossing Tunnel Project consists of three tunnels, a pedestrian, a cyclist and a vehicle tunnel. All under the Tyne River. As part of this project main design and build contractor Bouygues Travaux Publics contracted Shay Murtagh Precast Ltd. Shay Murtagh to manufacture and supply to South Tyneside Site M9 and UM9 beam for five spans incorporating two structures.
The structures were designed by Faber Maunsel and we produced the bridge beams at our modern production facilities in Raharney, Mullingar and delivered to Clients schedule which was partly dictated by strict road closures.
For one section of erection the existing Tyne Tunnel closed on the 11th and 12th of July. To allow construction of bridge beams for the new loop road. Shay Murtagh Precast Ltd. supplied to site for the erection of 47 no beams varying in length between 26m and 28m. All beams delivered and placed in 36 hours. The restriction of closure, lifted six and a half hours earlier than planned.
In total we delivered 75 bridge beams to Newcastle for the two structures.
