Bridge Beams for Palmerston Road Bridge

The replacement of a weak road bridge which crosses the Barking to Gospel Oak Overground railway line has finally been completed at Palmerston Road, Walthamstow, East London. The total cost of replacement; £2.9 million and funded by LOBEG (London Bridge Engineering Group) with Waltham Forest Council as the Client.

Network Rail was the Technical Approval Authority as they will maintain the structure. VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd part of the Volkervessels Group was the Main Contractor.

Weight and Width Restrictions

Stringent weight and width restrictions imposed in 2012 to prevent further deterioration. Resulting in diversions to the W11 and W15 buses and HGVs servicing Walthamstow Market.

Preliminary works began in April 2014 with the Main Contractor VolkerFitzpatrick needing to divert 16 services from five different utility firms.  Shay Murtagh Precast contracted by Volker Fitzpatrick to manufacture and deliver the superstructure within a tight time frame.

Bridge Specifications

The bridge comprises of an in-fill slab type bridge deck supported on precast cill beams via elastomeric bearings.  The cill beams are in turn supported on the existing concrete abutments.  The in-fill slab deck contains precast prestressed MY4 and MYE4 bridge beams.  Masonry clad reinforced concrete H4a high containment parapets, used along both sides of the bridge.

Shay Murtagh Precast manufactured the prestressed bridge beams, parapets and cill beams.  We carried out the detailed design in cooperation with Cass Hayward for these elements as well as the detailed design of the in-situ portion of the deck. Also produced the bearing schedule for the elastomeric bearings.

Palmerston Road Bridge is 14.095m wide and spans 12.22m between the centres of the bearings.  The bridge set at a high skew, namely 49 degrees. Carries a large number of services including a 480mm diameter surface water pipe.

A Trial Assembly

A trial assembly was completed in-house pre-delivery and inspected by Network Rail and VolkerFitzpatrick teams.  Delivery was completed to construction schedule which was over five weekends in August and September 2014, with the works. Carried out by Network Rail finally complete on December 4 reportedly four months ahead of the contract deadline.

We extend our thanks to Gordon O’Regan (Snr Project Manager) who oversaw the project and Brian Moore (Snr Site Agent) who was responsible for delivering the works. Plus all the Volker Fitzpatrick team as this was a complex build with very strict short possessions. Its successful completion was a credit to all involved.  We also thank Dave Cousins and the Cass Hayward team as the effective cooperation on design efforts was essential to the timely completion of the bridge.
