Delivering a bespoke precast solution for highway infrastructure

Shay Murtagh Precast recently delivered a bespoke precast concrete culvert solution for Powys County Council at Lower Trewern, Llandegley, near Llandrindod Wells.

The project required a robust structural solution to support the highway, with the culvert designed and manufactured to meet the specific requirements of the site and provide a long-term, durable infrastructure solution.

Shay Murtagh Precast manufactured and delivered the complete precast solution, including the box culvert units, headbeams and wing walls.
The project required a substantial culvert structure capable of supporting the highway while providing the required durability and structural performance for a long design working life.

Rather than relying on a standard off-the-shelf solution, the structure was designed specifically for the project requirements, taking into consideration the structural loading, exposure conditions and site requirements.

The finished structure comprised a 7.5m long precast concrete box culvert, with an internal width of 3.30m and an internal height of 2.10m.

Shay Murtagh Precast designed, manufactured and delivered the required precast concrete components to form the complete culvert structure.

The solution comprised:

  • 1 no. precast concrete box culvert – 7.5m long × 3.30m internal width × 2.10m internal height
  • 2 no. headbeams – 3.60m × 0.45m
  • 4 no. wing walls – 2.50m × 2.50m, incorporating a 30° taper

The precast culvert was modelled as a rigid frame, with the structural design completed in accordance with the relevant Eurocodes and UK National Annexes.

The design was undertaken in accordance with:

  • EN 1990
  • EN 1991-1-1
  • EN 1991-2
  • EN 1992-1
  • EN 1992-2

The concrete was specified for the required exposure conditions in accordance with EN 206 and BS 8500-1:2015+A2:2019, including exposure classes XC3/4, XD3 and XF4.
The structure was designed to Category 5, a design working life of more than 120 years, providing a durable solution for this important piece of highway infrastructure.

By combining in-house design expertise with off-site precast manufacture, Shay Murtagh Precast was able to deliver a bespoke structural solution engineered specifically for the project.

Precast construction provides the ability to manufacture complex structural elements in a controlled factory environment, helping to achieve consistent quality while reducing the amount of construction required on site.

The completed culvert provides a robust, durable structure supporting the highway and demonstrates the flexibility of precast concrete for civil engineering and infrastructure projects.

Working in Partnership

We were delighted to work with Powys County Council on this project and to deliver a solution designed around the specific requirements of the site.

We look forward to continuing our relationship and supporting the team on future infrastructure projects.
