UK Railway Structures New Safety and Installation practices

Shay Murtagh Precast paving the way in facilitating new innovative Safety and Installation practices for UK Railway Structures

Shay Murtagh Precast recently constructed the Trial Erection for Bromham Road in Bedford. An impressive double span structure 21m long and over 12m wide. This unique Trial Erection was one of the first of its kind in the Industry. With considerable emphasis on Safety and replicating the site conditions on Bromham Road.

Shay Murtagh facilitated a three week programme to complete the Trial Erection with attendance from Network Rail and J Murphy & Sons. Post demolition site levels taken from site survey. Then applied to the pre-prepared construction area at our company headquarters in Raharney. The existing abutments and connections then fully replicated on a sand and cement screed to receive the Riser Units and Cill Beams. All of which formed the main support system for the deck. The Edge Beams and Internal Decks were then lifted and installed in their relevant sequence. Finally the 4 no Approach Walls were installed to complete the overall structure.

Gantry Cranes and Plant at the Shay Murtagh facility provided all the lifting resource to manoeuvre and install the bridge deck elements. With a number of these elements weighing in excess of 50 tonne.

Shay Murtagh Team are positive that this new innovative practice will greatly improve Safety and Installation processes within the on-site environment for UK Rail Industry. We wish J Murphy & Sons every success in completing this benchmark project.
