The Irish Concrete Society’s 35th Annual Awards ceremony took place on the 8th of April 2017 in Croke Park. The event being one of the highlights in the construction industry’s calendar with 280 of the industry’s finest in attendance.
With a total of 26 projects being nominated across the three main award categories, six of which were in the Infrastructure category, Shay Murtagh Precast are delighted that Newlands Cross Flyover took first spot in this category. The new structure was commended for its excellence during construction and the final completed project.
Shay Murtagh Precast were contracted by BAM Contractors to manufacture and deliver 20 no. 32.0m W13 concrete bridge beams including 4 no. edge beams for the Newlands Cross Flyover.
The judges comments:
“It would be hard to find another project where the brief required the contractor to deal with the passage of 80,000 vehicles per day through the construction area. Provision of traffic routes alongside and through the building works was a complex and noteworthy exercise in itself. 1300 limestone faced precast concrete panels faced are anchored back into the embankments (in the “Reinforced Earth” system). They were used on either side of the raised roadway, where more conventional site cast concrete retaining walls would have served the same function but taken much longer to build. Two 28.0m spans of precast concrete bridge beams which carry a six lane N7 over the R113 Fonthill / Belgard Road crossing, these precast concrete beams weighing 52 tons support the span beams on the columns of the central island below. Concrete finishes throughout are excellent.”
